Measuring our height - Trū School

Measuring our height

“Why do I grow so fast?” was a question asked by one of the students after the introduction of the second project, A History of Me. This project explores the question, how do I begin? As part of our initial discussions the students mentioned possible factors that could impact how much we grow over a period of time such as nutritious food, good sleep and growth spurts. We also reflected on how our genes influence our height with a swift change in discussion about how tall our parents are. Gathering our thoughts, we decided to begin the long term process of collecting our height data and analyze it each month forming graphs.

The students explored ways to measure each others height using a tape measure next to someone standing, lying on the floor and measuring with rulers. We also learnt how to use the measuring tool on the iPads comparing our results with the other methods used to ensure we had an accurate first measurement for the month. This observation will continue across the year and the students are interested in seeing the results but were also keen to explore other measurements like the length of their feet.
