“I believe that every child wants to be seen, appreciated, and recognized for who they are. When children feel understood and guided by a skilled and trustworthy teacher, they will find the best versions of themselves”
BA in Biology, Mills College
MA in Education, Mills College
MA in Progressive Leadership in Progress, Bank Street College of Education
Besides launching her own elementary school, Julia has continued to develop her skills by attending a series of Courage to Teach retreats where participants use the space to self-reflect and find her own inner teacher. More recently she has received certification from Forest School, the international outdoor learning program, and enrolled at Bank Street College of NYC in a master’s degree program for progressive leadership.
Interests
Julia moved from Germany to the United States at age 20 to build a life that reflects her own values, informed (but not limited) by the ones she found growing up in a very close knit family. She thrives on simplicity, keeping a lifestyle with high ideals. Camping in national parks, hiking to waterfalls, or traveling by train through Europe stand out as some of her favorite vacations. She also has a fond memory of traveling to India and volunteering in an orphanage.
What I love about working with Trū students
“Students are looking forward to coming to school. They eagerly engage with the projects, their teachers and classmates, the materials, and the rich discussions. They become contemplative while singing and practicing mindfulness. They celebrate each other’s accomplishments and encourage each other in their challenges. They take pride in the school they are creating together.”
What people might find surprising about me
Perhaps something that people often find surprising is that I have two grown children. I love to spend time cooking. While I am more American than German, when I drive I become German, meaning very efficient and by the book!
